Tiered Overtime Rules: Configuring Rates That Match Your Policy

Zaffre Tech · June 17, 2026

Overtime is rarely a single flat rate. A weekday hour past schedule, a Saturday shift, and a public-holiday call-out often carry different multipliers. When those tiers are applied manually, the calculation drifts from employee to employee and from month to month.

Tiered overtime rules let you define the policy once and apply it uniformly to everyone.

Building the tiers

Most organisations need at least three overtime bands. A clear configuration assigns each band its own rate and the conditions under which it applies, so the system knows which multiplier to use for any given overtime hour.

  • Standard weekday overtime at your base multiplier.
  • Weekend or rest-day overtime at an enhanced rate.
  • Public-holiday overtime at the highest configured multiplier.
  • Optional caps so overtime cannot exceed a monthly or weekly limit.

From clock-out to payslip

Tiered rules only help if they connect to real attendance. The hours an employee actually worked beyond schedule should determine the overtime, not a manually typed figure. When overtime is derived from approved attendance and matched to the right tier, the payslip line is accurate by construction.

Zaffre HRM, the payroll module within Zaffre Axon, lets you configure overtime tiers and applies them automatically against approved overtime hours. Each overtime amount appears as its own payslip line, so employees and auditors can see exactly how it was earned.
