Managing Acting and Temporary Role Assignments

Zaffre Tech · June 17, 2026

The role that was supposed to be temporary

Someone steps up to cover a manager on leave, "just for a couple of months". A year later they are still acting in the role, with no formal record, no defined end date and no clarity on whether the extra responsibility came with extra pay. Temporary assignments that are not tracked tend to become permanent by accident — and contentious by default.

Temporary means time-bound

An acting or temporary assignment should be recorded as a lifecycle event with a clear start date, an intended end date and a defined arrangement. The system should know who is acting in what role and until when, so the assignment either ends on schedule or is deliberately converted into a permanent change.

Zaffre HRM, the HR product within the Zaffre Axon platform, supports temporary role changes within its lifecycle workflows. In Zaffre HRM, you record the acting assignment, its dates and any associated grade arrangement on the one connected employee record. When the period ends, the employee returns to their substantive role, or the change is converted into a confirmed promotion or role change — with the full history preserved either way.

Clarity for everyone

Because Zaffretech built Zaffreaxon as one connected platform, an acting assignment that carries an allowance flows into payroll for the right period and stops when it should. Reporting reflects who is genuinely leading, and nobody is left in limbo.

Employees know exactly what they are taking on and for how long. HR keeps a clean record of every temporary arrangement, and the organisation avoids the trap of accidental, unrecognised promotions.

Temporary should never mean untracked. With Zaffre HRM from Zaffre Tech, acting assignments stay clear and time-bound.
