How Much Income Tax on a Rs 300,000 Monthly Salary (2026-27)

Zaffre Tech · June 16, 2026

A Rs 300,000 monthly salary crosses into the 25% slab under Finance Act 2026. Zaffre Tech lays out the exact 2026-27 calculation.

Annual taxable salary

Rs 300,000 x 12 = Rs 3,600,000 a year. This sits in the 3,200,001 - 4,100,000 band, taxed as Rs 316,000 plus 25% on the amount above Rs 3,200,000.

The slabs involved

Annual taxable income (Rs)Tax
2,200,001 - 3,200,000Rs 116,000 + 20% over 2,200,000
3,200,001 - 4,100,000Rs 316,000 + 25% over 3,200,000

Step by step

  • Annual taxable salary: Rs 3,600,000
  • Fixed tax for the band: Rs 316,000
  • Amount over Rs 3,200,000: Rs 400,000
  • 25% of Rs 400,000: Rs 100,000
  • Annual income tax: Rs 316,000 + Rs 100,000 = Rs 416,000
  • Monthly income tax: Rs 416,000 / 12 = Rs 34,666.67 (about Rs 34,667)

The fixed figure does the heavy lifting

The Rs 316,000 fixed amount already includes the 0%, 1%, 11% and 20% charged on the first Rs 3,200,000. Only the Rs 400,000 above that boundary attracts the 25% rate. This keeps the system fair as incomes rise.

Marginal vs effective rate

Your marginal rate is 25%, but your effective rate is Rs 416,000 / Rs 3,600,000 = 11.56%. Even at this level, less than 12% of your salary leaves as income tax because most of it is taxed in lower bands.

Reliefs and deductions

Medical allowance is exempt up to 10% of basic salary under Clause 139 of the Second Schedule where free medical cover is not separately provided. Employer provident fund is exempt up to the lower of 10% of basic or Rs 150,000 a year. EOBI continues separately under the EOBI Act 1976. Correctly applied, these reliefs reduce the Rs 3,600,000 base.

Keep senior payroll compliant

At Rs 300,000 a month, fractional monthly amounts and variable pay make manual calculation error-prone. Zaffre Axon and the Zaffre HRM payroll module apply the FBR slabs, allowance taxability, provident fund and EOBI rules automatically, keeping each payslip aligned with Finance Act 2026 down to the rupee.
